Push/Fold

全下/弃牌

Context: Poker term: 全下/弃牌(Push/Fold) Push/Fold is an extreme strategy used in Texas Hold'em tournaments when you have a short stack. Players only make two decisions: push (go all-in) or fold, without making standard raises. The core idea is to abandon small raises and calls, using all-ins to maximize fold equity or realize showdown value, while avoiding being forced into a passive position due to a small stack. In practice, this strategy simplifies decisions, reduces errors, and leverages opponents' fear of folding to accumulate chips. Typical scenario: blinds are 1000/2000, and you have only 8000 chips left, sitting in the small blind. The opponent raises from the big blind, and you hold A8o. You go all-in for 8000, forcing the opponent to choose between the risk of calling and saving chips by folding. If the opponent folds, you win the pot risk-free.

Push/Fold

Overview

Push/Fold is a strategy used in the late stages of a Texas Hold'em tournament when a player's chip stack becomes very short relative to the blinds (typically below 10 big blinds). Under this strategy, the player abandons all standard raise or call options and chooses only to push (go all-in) or fold. The core objective is to maximize chip expected value by leveraging fold equity, while avoiding being at a disadvantage post-flop.

Applicable Scenarios

  • Stack Depth: Generally, when the stack is below 10 big blinds (BB), Push/Fold becomes the standard play. Below 5 BB, it is almost mandatory.
  • Late Tournament: Blind levels increase rapidly, ICM pressure is high, and post-flop technical advantages diminish.
  • Short Stack Players: Stacks are insufficient to withstand a standard raise followed by a re-raise from an opponent or a bet on the flop after being called.

Key Strategy Points

  • Push Range: Adjusted according to position, opponent tendencies, and stack size. For example, on the button (BTN), a wider range can be pushed, while under the gun (UTG) requires a tighter range.
  • Fold Equity: The success of Push/Fold relies on opponents folding. If an opponent's calling range is too wide, the expected value of the push decreases.
  • ICM Impact: Near the money bubble or final table, survival value increases, so the push range should be tightened.

Common Mistakes

  • Pushing too frequently: Without considering position and opponents, leading to being called by wide ranges.
  • Ignoring re-steals: When the big blind player is also short-stacked, a small blind push may be re-shoved, requiring range adjustments.
  • Not adjusting ranges: When opponents' calling ranges change, the push range should be adjusted accordingly.

Example

Assume blinds 1000/2000, you are in the small blind with 8000 chips (4 BB). The button folds. You hold A♠5♠. According to Push/Fold strategy, you should push all-in. Because your stack is very short, pushing forces the big blind to make a tough decision, and A5s has decent showdown value. If the big blind's calling range is tight, your fold equity is high.
