MP on Dry Board
MP on Dry Board
Dry Board Middle Position Strategy MP on Dry Board Refers to the action strategy for a middle position MP player when the flop board is dry i.e., low probability of straight or flush draws.
Characteristics of Dry Board
A Dry Board usually refers to a flop where the three cards are scattered with no possible flush or straight draws, e.g., K-7-2 rainbow. On such boards, opponents are less likely to have strong hands, but made hands like top pair or middle pair have high value.
Characteristics of MP Position
Middle Position (MP) is located after the Under the Gun (UTG) position and before the Cutoff. Post-flop, MP acts in the middle, can observe early players' actions, but still has players behind yet to act. MP players need to balance value bets and bluffs while guarding against raises or slow plays from later positions.
Typical Strategies for MP on Dry Boards
- Continuation Bet (C-bet): When you are the pre-flop raiser, on dry boards you should C-bet at a high frequency, as opponents' calling ranges are narrow and most weak hands will fold. Bet sizing can be small, around 1/3 to 1/2 pot, to force low pairs or overcards to fold.
- Check: If the pre-flop raiser is from an earlier position, MP can check, using positional advantage to gain information on later streets. Slow playing strong hands (e.g., top pair top kicker) on dry boards may induce opponents to bluff.
- Check-Raise: When you notice opponents are C-betting frequently, you can counter with a check-raise, especially with hands at least middle pair or better, to extract value and protect vulnerable hands that can be overtaken.
Notes
Dry boards have zero or very few draws, so bluffing frequency should be reduced; opponents' calling ranges are more concentrated on made hands. MP must be aware that later position players may semi-bluff with air or use position to bet. Adjust strategy based on opponent tendencies.
Education and Example
Example: Flop K♠7♣2♦, MP holds A♥K♦. Pre-flop, MP raises, creating a heads-up pot. On this dry board, MP C-bets 1/3 pot, opponent folds. If MP holds 8♠8♥, a similar bet is viable, as opponents rarely hit the board and it forces overcards to fold.
