MP Open Raise

Term: Middle Position Open Raise MP Open Raise In Texas Hold'em, the action of a player in middle position MP making the first raise.

Position and Concept

MP (Middle Position) refers to the two positions after UTG in a 6-max game (MP1, MP2), or the second and third positions after UTG in a 9-max game. MP Open Raise refers to the raise made by a player in that position when first entering the pot, typically when no one has raised preflop.

Purpose and Function

  • Steal blinds and dead money: Win the pot directly by raising.
  • Establish initiative: The raiser gains the initiative to act first or control the pot postflop.
  • Extract value: Build the pot with strong hands, enticing calls or re-raises.

Raise Range

MP Open Raise range is typically wider than EP but tighter than LP. Typical ranges include:

  • Strong hands: JJ+, AK, AQ.
  • Medium hands: ATs+, KQs, small to medium pairs (66-TT).
  • Some speculative hands: Suited connectors (e.g., JTs) and Axs. Specific ranges adjust according to table dynamics and opponents.

Strategic Considerations

  • Raise size: Typically 2.5-3.5bb, avoid being too large or too small.
  • Responding to re-raises: When facing a 3bet, decide to call, 4bet, or fold based on opponent's range and your hand strength.
  • Balance range: Avoid raising only with good hands; mix in appropriate bluffing hands.

Differences and Connections

  • Compared to Limp: Raising is more aggressive than limping, reduces multi-way pots, and controls the game pace.
  • Compared to Open Raise from EP: MP position has lower risk, allowing more hands to be included.

Typical Scenario

For example, in a 9-max game, it folds to MP holding AJo, raise to 3bb, all later players fold, blinds call. On the flop, either continuation bet or control the pot based on the board.
