MP Preflop 4-Bet Pot
MP Preflop 4-Bet Pot
Middle Position Preflop 4-Bet Pot
Concept Analysis
MP (Middle Position) is the seat in poker between UTG and the hijack, typically the third position in a 6-max game (one after UTG) or the third to fifth positions in a 9-max game. 4-Bet is the fourth raise preflop, meaning someone makes an Open Raise, another player 3-bets, and then another player 4-bets. Pot refers to the pot.
When a player in MP makes a 4-bet preflop, the pot is called an "MP Preflop 4-Bet Pot." This type of pot usually indicates a strong range, as MP is not the earliest position but still must account for reactions from later-position players.
Strategic Significance
- Range Polarization: The 4-bet range from MP typically includes value hands (e.g., AA, KK) and a few bluffs (e.g., A5s), because a 4-bet from middle position requires stronger hands to withstand potential 5-bets from later positions.
- Pot Control: After a 4-bet, the pot grows, and the stack-to-pot ratio (SPR) postflop becomes low, often leading to all-in situations.
- Positional Disadvantage: MP often lacks position postflop (unless it is the button or earlier), so 4-betting must be done cautiously to avoid being called by later-position players and ending up at a disadvantage.
Typical Scenario
- Example: 6-max table, blinds 1/2. UTG raises to 5, MP (holding KK) 3-bets to 15, CO player 4-bets to 40, MP calls or shoves. This creates an MP Preflop 4-Bet Pot.
- Distinction: If MP is the 3-bettor, the pot is called a "3-bet pot," not a "4-bet pot."
Notes
- This term is mostly used in discussing preflop actions; postflop, the "Preflop" qualifier is often dropped.
- The frequency and range of MP 4-bets differ between game structures (e.g., tournaments vs. cash games).
