MP River Delayed C-Bet Dry

mp-river-delayed-c-bet-dry Refers to a strategy where a player makes their first continuation bet on the river on a dry board, having not bet on the flop or turn.

Term Analysis

MP River Delayed C-Bet Dry is an advanced betting strategy in Texas Hold'em that combines three elements: position, timing, and board texture.

  • MP (Middle Position) : Refers to the position between UTG+1 on a 6-handed table or between UTG+1 and UTG+2 on a 9-handed table. This position has some preflop range advantage, but is not the strongest.
  • River: The betting round after the fifth community card is dealt, the final round of action.
  • Delayed C-Bet : This refers to not making a continuation bet (C-Bet) on the flop, but instead making the first bet on the turn or river. It is often used when the flop texture is unfavorable to one's range, or when trying to induce opponents to make mistakes on later streets.
  • Dry (Dry Board) : Refers to a board lacking obvious straight or flush draw possibilities, e.g., a rainbow board with disconnected cards (like K♠7♦2♣). On a dry board, opponents have fewer drawing hands, making them more vulnerable to value bets or bluffs.

Strategic Principle

On a dry flop (e.g., K-7-2 rainbow), the preflop raiser's range typically contains many high cards and medium pairs, and the probability of missing a strong hand is high. Many players choose to check to control the pot and avoid facing a raise on the turn or river. A delayed C-Bet executed on the river offers the following advantages:

  1. Range Polarization: Checking on the flop and turn makes the player's range appear weak, so a river bet is likely to be perceived as a value hand (e.g., hitting top pair or a set), forcing opponents to fold medium-strength hands (e.g., middle pair).
  2. Leveraging a Dry Board: On a dry board, opponents have very few draws, so a delayed bet is more likely to represent a strong hand, leading to a higher bluff success rate.
  3. Position Advantage : MP is still relatively early in position on the river, but if all opponents have checked, a bet can be executed.

Typical Scenario Example

  • Preflop: MP raises with A♠Q♦, Big Blind calls.
  • Flop: K♠7♦2♣ (dry, rainbow). MP checks (since he missed and the flop favors the Big Blind's range).
  • Turn: 3♦ (still dry). MP checks again.
  • River: 10♥ (no straight possible). MP bets about 2/3 pot. This bet represents possibly having a pair of K or 7, or TT, or a bluff. An opponent holding QJ will often fold.

Notes

  • The delayed C-Bet should be balanced: if used only as a bluff, opponents will catch on. Mix in some value hands (e.g., hitting top pair on the river) in the same line.
  • Suitable for situations where the flop range is weak. If you flop a strong hand (e.g., top pair top kicker), it is generally better to bet directly.
  • On dry boards, opponents' ranges contain a higher proportion of made hands, so a delayed C-Bet may have difficulty getting better hands to fold. Adjust based on opponent tendencies.
