Term Analysis

MP River Probe Bet Monotone combines multiple Texas Hold'em elements:

  • MP (Middle Position): The middle position, typically UTG+1 in a 6-handed game or the HJ seat in a full-ring game. This position has informational advantage postflop but is not extremely late.
  • River Probe Bet: A probing bet on the river, typically small-sized, aiming to gain information about the opponent's hand strength at a low cost, or to force opponents with medium-strength hands to fold.
  • Monotone: Refers to the flop, turn, and river all being of the same suit, making the possibility of a flush extremely high, and the flush draw completes on the river.

Applicable Scenarios

A typical scenario is when the player is the preflop raiser or the flop aggressor, holding a medium-strength hand (e.g., top pair weak kicker or two pair), but the board is monotone, fearing that the opponent has a flush or a stronger made hand. In this situation, betting about one-third of the pot both shows strength and induces action from the opponent.

Strategic Considerations

  • If the opponent calls, it indicates they may have a flush or a strong made hand. The player should consider check-folding on later streets.
  • If the opponent raises, the player can usually fold.
  • If the opponent folds, the player successfully steals the pot. Even if called, the player still has showdown value.

This bet is especially effective when the fourth card of the same suit comes on the river, as the opponent's range contains many flush combinations, but many medium-strength hands will fold, giving it positive expected value.
