Multi-Table SNG In the Money

In multi-table SNG multi-table single-table instant tournaments, the stage where players enter the money, ensuring they receive prize money.

Overview

Multi-Table SNG (MTSNG) is an instant tournament format with more participants than a single-table SNG, typically featuring multiple payout spots. When the number of remaining players drops below the money bubble, the remaining players enter "In the Money" (ITM), meaning they have locked in at least a minimum cash prize.

Differences from Single-Table SNG

A Single-Table SNG usually has around 10 players, with the top three receiving payouts, making the ITM phase relatively simple. A Multi-Table SNG involves more entrants (e.g., 36, 90, 180 players), with the money bubble covering roughly 10%-20% of the field. Reaching the money requires longer survival and elimination of opponents.

ITM Strategy Changes

  • Before entering the money (bubble phase): Players must adjust their strategy based on stack depth and ICM (Independent Chip Model), avoiding risky elimination during the bubble.
  • After entering the money: Since a minimum cash prize is already secured, the strategy shifts to chasing higher rankings. This allows for a broader starting hand range and aggressive play against short stacks, while also considering pay jumps when making decisions.
  • Short stack survival: On the money bubble’s edge, short stack players tend to wait for favorable opportunities to avoid losing their prize money; big stacks can leverage their chip advantage to apply pressure.

Terminology Usage

"Multi-Table SNG In the Money" is often abbreviated as MTSNG ITM. In the poker community, this term specifically refers to the money stage of a Multi-Table SNG, distinguishing it from the simpler ITM concept of Single-Table SNGs.

Example

In a 90-player Multi-Table SNG with a payout structure for the top 9, when 10 players remain, the bubble begins. After the 10th player is eliminated, the remaining 9 players enter ITM, each securing at least the minimum cash prize.
