Overview

Mystery Bounty Tournament is a special format where the bounty amount received after eliminating a player is randomly drawn and can be much higher than a normal bounty. The middle stage typically occurs when the number of remaining players drops to about 30%-60%, the blinds have increased significantly relative to the starting level, and the average stack depth is around 20-40 big blinds.

Stage Characteristics

  • Increased blind pressure: The dead money in the pot (including blinds and antes) represents a larger portion of stacks, but it hasn't yet reached the late-stage frequency of frequent pre-flop all-ins.
  • Highlighted bounty value: The mystery bounty above each player becomes a huge temptation. Especially when there is a high-value mystery bounty (e.g., the grand prize in the total bounty pool), the target player becomes a marked target.
  • Uneven chip distribution: Big stacks can apply pressure more frequently, while small stacks face a trade-off between survival and bounty opportunities.

Strategy Adjustments

  • Increased aggression: Big stacks should actively isolate short stacks to try to claim the mystery bounty, but avoid confronting another big stack directly that could lead to their own elimination.
  • Tighter defense ranges: Facing a big stack's raise, medium and small stacks need stricter calling ranges because the reward for eliminating an opponent is much higher than the value of ordinary hands.
  • Bounty-oriented decisions: When a player is found to have a high mystery bounty, other players may shove with a wider range against them. This dynamic distorts the standard ICM calculations of a tournament.
  • Balance survival and aggression: When near the money bubble, one must balance survival with opportunities to claim bounties.

Considerations

The middle stage is the period of greatest information asymmetry in mystery bounty tournaments, as many players are just starting to adjust their strategies. It is recommended to closely monitor opponents' stack sizes and mystery bounty amounts (if visible), and use fold equity to create opportunities. Over-pursuing bounties can lead to early elimination, so one must adapt flexibly based on table dynamics.
