No Limit Hold'em Rules
No Limit Hold'em is a variant of poker where players can bet any amount of their chips at any time, with the maximum bet limited only by the size of the player's stack.
Overview
No Limit Hold'em (NLHE) is the most popular form of poker, played in major tournaments like the WSOP Main Event. It is a community card game where each player receives two private cards (hole cards) and uses them with five community cards to make the best five-card hand. The defining feature is that players can bet any amount from the minimum up to their entire stack at any betting opportunity.
Betting Structure
The game uses a button (dealer position) and blinds (small blind and big blind) to force action. The minimum bet is the size of the big blind, except for the preflop round where the big blind is considered a "live" bet. Raises must be at least equal to the previous raise amount (e.g., if a player bets 100, the next raise must be at least 100 more, making it a minimum total of 200). However, in no limit, there is no maximum number of raises, and players can go all-in at any time.
Betting Rounds
There are four betting rounds:
- Preflop: After receiving two hole cards, action starts with the player to the left of the big blind (under the gun). Players can fold, call the big blind, or raise.
- Flop: Three community cards are dealt face up. Action begins with the player to the left of the button (first active player clockwise from the dealer).
- Turn: A fourth community card is dealt. Same betting order.
- River: A fifth community card is dealt. Final betting round.
If at any point all players but one have folded, the remaining player wins the pot without showing cards.
All-In and Side Pots
A player can go all-in by betting all remaining chips. If they have less than the required bet, they can only win the portion of the pot they contributed to. Side pots are created for remaining players to continue betting beyond the all-in player's chips.
Showdown
If more than one player remains after the final betting round, a showdown occurs. The player who made the last aggressive action (bet or raise) shows first; otherwise, the first player to the left of the button shows. The best five-card hand wins the pot (using any combination of hole cards and community cards). Standard poker hand rankings apply: royal flush, straight flush, four of a kind, full house, flush, straight, three of a kind, two pair, one pair, high card.
Common Rules and Etiquette
- Verbal declarations are binding.
- Chips must be placed in front of the player in a single forward motion.
- String bets (putting chips in multiple motions without a clear declaration) are not allowed.
- Players should protect their cards at all times.
- Acting out of turn can lead to penalties.
Strategy Considerations
No limit play involves complex strategies like pot odds, implied odds, bluffing, and bet sizing. Unlike limit Hold'em, players can bet large amounts to put pressure on opponents, making hand reading and risk management crucial.
