Context: Term article: 彩虹面(Rainbow Board)
Overview
"Rainbow Board" is a term in Texas Hold'em, specifically referring to a flop where the three community cards are of three different suits. At this point, there are no two suited cards on the board, so no player can use the community cards to form a flush draw. The term vividly describes the three suits as colorful as a rainbow, but without the possibility of forming a potential draw.
Strategic Significance
A rainbow board reduces the immediate possibility of a flush draw on the flop. Therefore, when analyzing the board, players focus more on straight draws, top pair, top pair top kicker (TPTK), and other made hands or draws. Since there is no flush draw, it is difficult to leverage a flush threat when bluffing, but a continuation bet (C-Bet) can still represent a strong hand. On a rainbow board, the value of top pair is usually higher because opponents are less likely to call with a flush draw. At the same time, a rainbow board also reduces the probability of a backdoor flush draw (Runner-Runner), though it is not entirely eliminated.
Comparison with Other Board Textures
- Double-suited board: The flop has two cards of the same suit, creating a flush draw, making the board wet.
- Monotone board: The flop has three cards of the same suit, already creating a possible flush, making the board very wet. A rainbow board is considered a relatively dry board, especially when the three cards are not closely connected in rank, often resulting in a no-draw situation.
Example
The flop is ♠K ♥7 ♦3, with all cards of different suits, making it a rainbow board. Players on the flop will not have a flush draw, but may have a gutshot straight draw or an open-ended straight draw. For example, a player holding ♠J ♥9 may complete a straight on the turn or river.
