What is a Rainbow River?

In poker, particularly in flop games like Texas Hold'em, the term "rainbow" refers to a board where no three cards share the same suit. A Rainbow River is the fifth community card on the turn or river (most commonly the river) that, when dealt, does not create a three-flush on the board. This means the river card is a fourth suit, or more typically, it matches a suit that appears only once or twice on the board but not three times. Essentially, it guarantees that no player can have a flush using only community cards. The term is used to describe a river that eliminates the possibility of a flush completing.

Significance in Play

A rainbow river simplifies hand reading and reduces the number of possible hands an opponent could hold. Since no flush is possible, players no longer need to worry about flush draws or completed flushes. This shifts the focus to other made hands like straights, full houses, or trips. A rainbow river often makes the board "dry" in terms of draws, which can affect betting strategies. For example, if the flop and turn were coordinated with draws, a rainbow river may reduce action, as the only remaining threats are straight draws or slow-played monsters.

Example

Consider a board: A♠ K♣ 8♥ (rainbow flop). Turn: Q♦ (now suits: spade, club, heart, diamond — still a rainbow). River: 2♠. The river is a spade, but there are only two spades on the board (A♠ and 2♠), so no flush is possible. This is a rainbow river. In contrast, if the river were Q♠, there would be three spades, creating a flush possibility.

Strategic Implications

When the river is a rainbow, players can more confidently value-bet without fearing a flush. Hands like top pair or two pair become stronger relative to the board. Bluffing frequencies may decrease because the number of missed draws is lower. However, players must still watch for straights (if the board is paired or contains gaps) and boats. A rainbow river can also induce bluffs from players who attempted to represent a flush draw earlier.
