Raise C-Bet
Raise C-Bet
Term: Raise C-Bet On the flop, when facing an opponent's continuation bet, a player chooses to raise.
Action Description
Raise C-Bet is a counter-strategy on the flop. When the preflop raiser makes a continuation bet (C-Bet) on the flop, the opponent can choose to fold, call, or raise. Raise C-Bet refers to the raising action by the caller, typically an exploitative move against the opponent's C-Bet range.
Strategic Significance
Protecting Range and Value
- When a player holds a strong hand (e.g., top pair or better), raising can quickly build the pot and create higher value for subsequent betting rounds (turn, river).
- For drawing hands (e.g., flush draw, straight draw), raising may force the opponent to fold, winning the pot outright; even if called, equity can be realized in later streets.
Exploiting Opponents
- If an opponent C-Bets too frequently, raising can pressure them, forcing them to reduce their continuation betting tendency. Therefore, raise C-Bet is an effective way to exploit tight-passive opponents.
Bluffing and Balance
- Raise C-Bet can also be used as a bluff, representing an extremely strong hand to force opponents to fold medium-strength hands. A balanced raising range should include both value hands and bluffs, typically with a bluff-to-value ratio of about 2:1, depending on the opponent and the board.
Example
- Player A raises preflop, Player B calls. The flop is K♠ 7♥ 2♦, A bets 2/3 pot (continuation bet). B holds A♠ 9♠ (flush draw) and raises to 3 times the pot. This raise represents possibly holding a pair of Kings, forcing A to fold or make a difficult call.
Notes
- Raise C-Bet is not suitable for all situations; consider board texture, opponent tendencies, and your own range. Raising is more justified on wet boards (e.g., connected cards, possible flush draws); on dry boards (e.g., K-7-2 rainbow), value raises are more reliable.
- Against opponents who C-Bet frequently, raise C-Bet can increase expected value (EV), but avoid overusing it to prevent being counter-exploited.
