River C-Bet

River C-Bet

e., the pre-flop raiser bets again on the river after either not betting on the flop and turn, or after having bet on both streets.

Overview

A River C-Bet refers to the act of making a continuation bet on the river by the preflop raiser. A continuation bet (C-Bet) typically means the preflop raiser leads out on the flop, but it can also extend to subsequent streets as long as the player maintains an aggressive posture. The River C-Bet is the application of this concept on the final street.

Strategic Significance

  • Value Bet: When a player holds a strong hand on the river (such as top pair or better, a straight, a flush, etc.), they make a continuation bet to extract value from an opponent's weak hands or missed draws.
  • Bluff Bet: If a player's bets on the flop and turn failed to force a fold, a river continuation bet can represent a made strong hand, pressuring the opponent to fold marginal holdings.
  • Range Balancing: High-level players use both value hands and bluffs for continuation bets on the river, making it difficult for opponents to read their range.

Example Scenarios

  • Typical Pattern: A player raises preflop, makes a continuation bet on the flop, checks the turn (indicating weakness or pot control), then bets again on the river. In this pattern, the river continuation bet might be perceived as a bluff, so it should be used cautiously.
  • Triple Barrel: Continuation bets on the flop, turn, and river consecutively. This typically represents a very strong hand, but can also be used as a deep bluff in certain situations.

Considerations

  • Board Texture: Wet boards (with possible straights or flushes) are more suitable for river continuation bets than dry boards, because opponents are more likely to have missed draws.
  • Opponent Tendencies: Against calling stations, river continuation bets should primarily be for value; against tight-passive players, bluff frequency can be increased.
  • Position: When in position, executing a river continuation bet is easier because you get to see your opponent's actions first.

The River C-Bet is an important offensive tool in Texas Hold'em, requiring flexible use based on opponent reads, board analysis, and pot control.
