河牌圈冷跟注(River Cold Call)

River Cold Call

On the river, after the current player bets, another player raises, and a third player who has not participated in that round's betting directly calls the raise.

Meaning

River Cold Call refers to a scenario on the river where, after one player bets and another player raises, a third player directly calls that raise without having made any prior bet or raise in that round (i.e., without having actively put chips into the pot). This action is called a "Cold Call," emphasizing that the player is calling a raise without having previously bet.

Strategic Considerations

Cold calling on the river generally requires a strong hand, as it reveals hand strength and may face the risk of a subsequent re-raise. Typical scenarios include:

  • Value Hands: When holding the nuts or a near-nut hand, a cold call can be used to induce further betting or a re-raise from an opponent.
  • Bluff Catching: If the raiser is perceived to be bluffing but the bettor may hold a medium-strength hand, a cold call with a moderately strong hand can be used to catch the bluff.
  • Risks: Cold calling can easily telegraph that you hold a strong hand and may leave you vulnerable to a squeeze from a player in late position.

In multi-way pots, the strength-signaling effect of a cold call is even more pronounced, and it is generally recommended to only execute this play with premium holdings.
