River Double Barrel on Wet Board

On a wet board, a player's second consecutive bet on the river (typically having bet once on the flop, while the turn may have been checked or bet).

Overview

"River Double Barrel" is not a standard poker term. Typically, "Double Barrel" refers to consecutive bets on the flop and turn, while "River Double Barrel" might mean: on a wet board, betting the flop, checking the turn, then betting again on the river; or betting flop and turn consecutively, then a third bet on the river (which is actually a Triple Barrel). To avoid ambiguity, this entry defines it as: a second bet on the river (regardless of previous bet counts) on a wet board.

Strategic Implications

Wet boards (e.g., connected cards, possible flush draws) often yield strong hands. A second bet on the river (a "double barrel") typically represents:

  • Value bet: Holding a made hand (e.g., top pair or better), aiming to extract value from busted draws or weaker made hands.
  • Bluff: Using blockers from draws on the wet board to force opponents off medium-strength hands.

Such bets must consider opponent ranges, board texture, and previous actions. If the opponent called the flop but checked the turn, a river double barrel may be interpreted as a strong hand or a sophisticated bluff.

Example

Flop: J♠ 9♠ 4♥ (wet, with straight and flush possibilities). Hero bets the flop, turn 8♦ check-check, river 2♥, Hero bets again. Here, Hero might hold Q♣10♣ (value bet with a made straight) or A♠ 7♠ (bluff with a busted draw).
