卫星赛进入奖励圈(Satellite In the Money)

Satellite In the Money

Winning a prize in a satellite tournament, usually a seat to a higher-level tournament, is equivalent to being in the money.

Concept

A Satellite is a special tournament format where the prize is not cash, but an entry seat to a higher-level tournament. When a player finishes In the Money in a satellite, it means they have earned a seat in that higher-level event.

Difference from Regular ITM

In a regular tournament, "In the Money" usually refers to receiving a cash payout, while in a satellite the prize is a seat, with a value equal to the buy-in of the target event. Therefore, satellite prize pools often have only a few spots (e.g., top finishers), making competition much fiercer.

Strategic Implications

Since the prize is a fixed seat, players' decisions in a satellite are not based on the cash value of chips but on the goal of "securing a seat." Common strategies include:

  • Playing conservatively near the money bubble to avoid unnecessary risks.
  • Using ICM (Independent Chip Model) to evaluate chip value, as short-stacked players may be more inclined to take risks.

Example

In a $100 buy-in satellite, the top 5 finishers win a $10,000 Main Event seat. When only 6 players remain and the 6th gets nothing, players on the bubble adjust their strategy to ensure they finish in the top 5.

Common Misuse

Sometimes players use "ITM" to refer to any situation where a prize is won, but in satellites it should be clarified as "winning a seat." Additionally, some satellite variants award cash prizes, but by definition, satellite prizes are entry tickets.
