Satellite Middle Stage

卫星赛中期

**Term: 卫星赛中期 (Satellite Middle Stage)** The stage of a satellite tournament between early accumulation and the bubble period. Typically, the number of participants has significantly decreased, and player strategies shift toward balancing survival and chip accumulation.

Context: Term article: Satellite Middle Stage

Overview

In a Satellite Tournament, the middle stage typically occurs when the blind levels rise and the number of participants has dwindled to roughly half or less. At this point, the tournament is not yet at the bubble, but the prize pool is not far off. Players need to shift from the early loose-aggressive blind-stealing strategy to a more protective approach, as every chip is directly tied to the chance of winning a ticket or cash prize.

Strategic Characteristics

  • ICM Pressure Increases: As the remaining players decrease, the non-linear growth of chip value (the Independent Chip Model, ICM) begins to significantly affect decision-making. Players should avoid going all-in or calling large raises without a substantial advantage, to prevent early elimination.
  • Primarily Tight-Aggressive: The range of hands played is usually tightened, especially against players with smaller stacks; large pot confrontations should be avoided. Medium-stacked players can use position to steal blinds when appropriate, but should be wary of re-steals.
  • Observe Opponents: Pay attention to player styles – deep-stacked players may use their advantage to apply pressure, while short-stack players tend to either shove or fold. Adjust your strategy based on different stack sizes.
  • Protect Weak Hands: When holding medium-strength hands, consider controlling the pot or folding, avoiding excessive investment postflop.

Typical Scenario

For example, in a 100-player satellite tournament, when 30-40 players remain, that is the middle stage. The blind level is roughly 1/20 to 1/10 of the starting stack, at which point a standard raise might account for 10%-15% of a player's stack. If holding medium pairs or suited connectors, the common choice is to call or fold outright, rather than re-raise.

Goal

The core goal of the middle stage is to smoothly transition to the bubble, ensuring at least a minimum cash (Min-cash). Players should avoid unnecessary risks while looking for opportunities to accumulate chips from cautious opponents.
