Positional Disadvantage
The small blind (SB) is in the worst position on the flop because it must act first on every subsequent street. In a 3-bet pot, where the pot is larger and the opponent’s range is usually stronger, this positional disadvantage is amplified. The SB’s preflop 3-bet range is typically tighter, consisting mainly of value hands, but may also include some mixed strategies.
Range Characteristics
In a typical 3-bet pot of SB vs BTN (button) or SB vs CO (cutoff), the SB’s preflop range includes:
- Strong value hands: JJ+, AK
- Some medium-strength hands: ATs+, KQs, small to middle pairs (for balance) Due to the positional disadvantage, the SB should not 3-bet too many marginal hands.
Flop Strategy
- Continuation Bet Frequency: Because of the poor position, the SB should bet cautiously and prefer a mixed strategy. On dry boards (e.g., K72 rainbow), a high c-bet frequency is acceptable; on wet boards (e.g., T998 two-tone), checking is more common.
- Check-Raise: The SB’s check-raise range should include strong made hands (top pair or better) and some draws to protect the checking range.
- Facing a Bet: When the SB checks and the opponent bets, decision to call or fold depends on pot odds and opponent tendencies. Since the pot is large, implied odds for calling are better, but the opponent’s range advantage must be considered.
Example
Assume NL100, effective stacks 100BB. SB 3-bets to 12BB, BB folds, BTN calls. Flop comes K♠7♦2♣. SB holds A♥K♥. Here, a bet of about 1/3 pot (roughly 8BB) can be made for value while denying BTN’s draw equity. If SB holds 9♦8♦, a check-call can be considered to realize equity with the draw.
Key Points
- The SB should play tighter in 3-bet pots and avoid over-bluffing.
- Pay attention to the opponent’s preflop calling range and how it adapts to the flop.
- Use the checking range wisely to avoid being exploited.
