SB Raise C-Bet

Term: Small Blind Continuous Bet SB Raise C-Bet A continuation bet made on the flop by the player in the small blind after raising pre-flop.

Small Blind Continuation Bet (SB Raise C-Bet)

Basic Concept

SB [Raise C-Bet] (Small Blind Raise Continuation Bet) refers to the bet made by the Small Blind player who voluntarily raised preflop and then continues to apply pressure on the flop. The C-Bet itself is the act of the preflop raiser betting again on the flop, and combined with the SB position it has unique strategic implications.

Positional Characteristics

  • Preflop Disadvantage: The Small Blind is at a positional disadvantage preflop (acts first postflop), so the SB's preflop raising range is usually tighter to compensate for the positional deficit.
  • Postflop Range Advantage: If the SB raises preflop and gets called, on the flop the SB represents a stronger range (due to the tight raising range), making the C-Bet more likely to succeed.
  • Out-of-Position Bet: The SB's C-Bet occurs from a disadvantaged position, requiring consideration of subsequent actions if raised or called by the opponent.

Strategic Considerations

  • Bet Frequency: It is generally recommended that the SB C-Bet at a high frequency on flops that are rainbow and unconnected, while reducing frequency on wet boards (e.g., with possible flush draws or many straight draws) to avoid being raised by the opponent's draws.
  • Bet Sizing: Typically around 2/3 to 3/4 of the pot to maximize fold equity while protecting one's own range.
  • Example: SB raises to 3BB preflop, Big Blind calls. Flop is K♠7♦2♣. SB can bet about 4.5BB as a C-Bet. If faced with a raise, SB must evaluate the opponent's range and decide whether to fold or re-raise.

Common Mistakes

  • Overuse: The Small Blind should not automatically C-Bet every flop, especially when the flop does not match the SB's range (e.g., SB's raising range contains many high cards, but the flop comes with small connected cards).
  • Ignoring Position: When out of position, the opponent's raising frequency against a C-Bet is higher, so the SB needs a defense range (e.g., top pair or better, draws).
