SB River Single Raised Pot

SB River Single Raised Pot

Term: Small Blind River Single Raised Pot SB River Single Raised Pot Refers to the situation where the player in the small blind position acts on the river in a pot that had only one raise preflop.

Position and Pot Type

SB (Small Blind) is one of the worst positions preflop because it is always out of position postflop. A Single Raised Pot refers to a pot where there was only one raise preflop (usually 2-3x the big blind), no re-raise or all-in, and the pot size is relatively small.

River Strategy Key Points

In a single raised pot on the river, the Small Blind player's action range is usually wider, but adjustments must be made based on board texture, opponent's range, and bet sizing. Generally:

  • Value Bet: When the SB holds a strong hand (e.g., top pair or better) and expects the opponent to call, a value bet around 50%-75% of the pot can be made. Avoid over-betting that might cause the opponent to fold.
  • Bluff: Since single raised pots offer better odds (compared to 3bet pots), bluffs can be appropriate when needed, but should be chosen with blocker combos and only when the opponent's fold frequency is high enough.
  • Check-Raise: If the SB checks and the opponent bets, the SB may consider raising to represent a strong hand or as a bluff. However, this strategy requires caution, as raising out of position can be exploited by the opponent.
  • Check-Call: On the river, check-calling is typically used with medium-strength hands to bluff-catch or for showdown value. It should be analyzed in conjunction with the opponent's preflop range and postflop actions.

Common Mistakes

  • Overfold: Due to positional disadvantage, some players are too conservative and fold too often on the river, allowing opponents to exploit them.
  • Overbluff: Because single raised pots are smaller, the cost of bluffing is low, but if the opponent calls frequently, it can lead to losses.
  • Ignoring Range Balance: On the river, the SB should mix value bets and bluffs to avoid being easily read by the opponent.

Example

Preflop SB raises to 3BB, BB calls, pot 6BB. Flop both check. Turn SB bets half pot, BB calls. River SB holds top pair and can consider betting about 2/3 pot for value.
