SB River Squeeze Pot

SB River Squeeze Pot

Term: 小盲河牌挤压底池(SB River Squeeze Pot) The small blind player's strategy on the river of making a large bet to force multiple opponents to fold and win the pot.

Overview

SB River Squeeze Pot is an aggressive play initiated on the river. The player in the small blind (SB) makes a large bet, aiming to apply pressure on any remaining opponents in the pot, forcing them to fold. This term combines three elements: position (SB), street (River), and squeeze (Squeeze).

Strategic Background

Squeeze typically refers to a large preflop raise designed to force out callers, but it also applies on the river. The core of a river squeeze is exploiting opponents’ fear of strong hands, especially when the board texture suggests possible straights, flushes, or full houses. The small blind, being out of position, can compensate for this disadvantage by squeezing to take down the pot.

Applicable Scenarios

  • Multiway Pot: The squeeze is most effective when two or more opponents remain on the river. If their ranges are weak, a large bet can force them to fold.
  • Board Connectivity: The squeeze has a higher success rate when the river completes obvious draws or brings a high card. Conversely, on a dry board, opponents are more likely to hold made hands, increasing the risk of the squeeze.
  • Opponent Tendencies: The squeeze works better against opponents who fold frequently or against regular players; be cautious against players who like to bluff-catch.

Considerations

  • Stack Depth: The large bet must leave enough remaining chips to maintain pressure; typically bet 2/3 of the pot or more.
  • Own Range: The small blind should balance squeezes with value bets to avoid being predictable.
  • Position Disadvantage: If the river squeeze is called, consider the opponent’s likely strong range and be prepared to fold.

Example

Suppose the small blind called preflop, the flop went multiway check, someone bet on the turn and was called, then the river brought a blank. The small blind chooses to bet 150% of the pot, forcing the others to fold. This is a classic SB river squeeze.
