Showdown Frequency
Showdown Frequency
In practice, this metric is used to evaluate a player's aggression or bluffing tendency: a high showdown frequency indicates the player tends to go to showdown and win with hand strength, likely passive or value-oriented; a low showdown frequency suggests the player often forces opponents to fold through bets or raises, involving more bluffs or semi-bluffs. For example, a tight-aggressive player with a post-flop showdown frequency of only 20% means that 80% of his post-flop hands do not reach showdown, possibly winning pots through continuation bets or turn raises.
Overview
Showdown Frequency (SDF) is a statistical metric that measures how often a player actually reaches a showdown after the flop. It reflects the proportion of hands in which a player continues post-flop and eventually shows their cards, commonly used to assess a player’s aggression and bluffing tendencies.
Calculation Method
Showdown Frequency = (Number of hands that reach showdown post-flop) / (Total number of post-flop hands) × 100%.
Note: This metric only counts hands where the player sees the flop; it excludes hands that end before the flop.
Interpretation and Application
- High Showdown Frequency (>40%): Typically indicates that a player tends to reach showdown with strong hands and bluffs less. This player may be “tight” or “passive.” Such players often have made hands at showdown, so calling their bets requires stronger holdings.
- Low Showdown Frequency (<25%): Suggests that the player often forces opponents to fold through bets or raises post-flop, bluffs more frequently, or gives up when they miss the board. These players may be more aggressive but tend to have weaker hands at showdown.
- Medium Showdown Frequency (25%-40%): Represents a balanced player who mixes [value bets] with appropriate bluffs, making them difficult to exploit.
Relationship with Other Metrics
Showdown Frequency is often analyzed together with WTSD% (Went to Showdown) and Post-flop Aggression Factor (AF). For example:
- Low Showdown Frequency + High WTSD%: The player only goes to showdown with strong hands, possibly too conservative.
- High Showdown Frequency + Low WTSD%: The player often reaches showdown with weak hands, possibly too passive or calling too much.
Limitations
Showdown Frequency is influenced by game type (cash vs. tournament), opponent style, and [table dynamics]. For instance, in [deep-stacked] cash games, players may prefer to end hands before showdown, naturally lowering the frequency. Therefore, it should be analyzed within a specific context.
