Squeeze from BTN

Squeeze from BTN

Term: Squeeze from BTN Refers to the action where the player on the button, after someone raises and at least one person calls, makes a large re-raise to use positional and range advantage to force opponents to fold or take down the pot.

Overview

Squeeze is a common preflop aggressive strategy, typically occurring when someone opens and one or more players call. The player executing the squeeze makes a large re-raise (usually 3-5 times the original raise) to force the callers to fold weak hands and isolate the original raiser. The button (BTN) is the ideal position for a squeeze because it acts last postflop, providing an information advantage.

Key Strategy Points

  • Range Selection: The squeezing range from the button typically includes strong hands (e.g., QQ+, AK) as well as hands with blocking effects (e.g., A5s, K9s), which block some of the opponent's strong combinations while maintaining postflop playability.
  • Sizing: A typical squeeze size is 4-5 times the original raise plus 1-2 big blinds per caller. Example: UTG opens to 3BB, MP calls, BTN can raise to 12-15BB.
  • Considerations: Evaluate the original raiser's looseness/tightness, the callers' defensive tendencies, your own image, and effective stack depth. Squeeze frequency can be reduced with deep stacks, while it can be more aggressive with short stacks.

Advantages

  • Uses position to control the pot postflop.
  • Forces multiple opponents to fold, winning the pot directly and reducing variance.
  • Creates many uncontested pots when opponents fold frequently.

Risks

If called or re-raised, the squeezer may end up in a disadvantageous situation, especially against tight-aggressive players. Overusing this play may lead opponents to adjust by defending with a wider range.
