Squeeze from UTG+1

Squeeze from UTG+1

Term: Squeeze from UTG+1 From the UTG+1 position, after the UTG player raises and at least one player calls, you make a large re-raise with a strong hand, forcing the callers to fold and isolating the raiser.

Concept

Squeeze from UTG+1 (under the gun plus one squeeze) is a common preflop aggressive play that occurs from the UTG+1 position at a full ring table (typically 9 or 10 players). When the UTG player opens with a raise and one or more players (especially those in worse position) call, the UTG+1 player executes a squeeze by raising significantly (usually 3-4 times the pot) to force all callers to fold, leaving the pot heads-up against the original raiser.

Applicable Conditions

  • Hand Strength: Usually requires a strong hand such as TT+ or AQ+, to contest the UTG raising range. However, medium or speculative hands can occasionally be used for balance, though with higher risk.
  • Opponent Tendencies: Most effective when the calling players have a high fold-to-squeeze rate.
  • Stack Depth: More effective with deep effective stacks (roughly 40BB+), to avoid being forced to fold by a 4bet.

Purpose and Advantages

  1. Stealing Dead Money: The callers have already invested chips; if they fold, their contributions become dead money.
  2. Position Advantage: After a squeeze, you typically act later in the hand, gaining control on the flop.
  3. Polarized Range: Shows a very strong hand to increase the credibility of bluffs.

Risks and Considerations

  • The UTG raising range is generally strong, so your squeeze may face a 4bet; adjust based on opponent tendencies.
  • If the callers are loose-passive, a squeeze might force multiple folds but will also reveal your hand strength.
  • In late stages of tournaments, use cautiously under ICM pressure to avoid early elimination.
