Triple Barrel from SB

Triple Barrel from SB

Term: Triple Barrel from SB A strategy of continuously betting on the flop, turn, and river from the small blind.

Triple Barrel from SB

Overview

Triple Barrel from SB refers to the action of a player in the Small Blind position betting on the flop, turn, and river consecutively. This strategy is typically used to represent a strong hand, attempting to force opponents to fold or to extract value from drawing hands. Since the Small Blind has already invested half a big blind preflop and is out of position postflop (acting first), this strategy should be used cautiously.

Usage Scenarios

  • Value Bet: When holding a strong made hand (e.g., top pair top kicker or better), betting all three streets can maximize value, especially on wet board textures where opponents may have draws.
  • Bluff: On board textures favorable to the Small Blind's range, such as flops with connected cards or flush draws, and when the turn or river completes draws, you can represent a strong hand to force opponents to fold.
  • Range Advantage: If the Small Blind raised preflop and the pot is heads-up, their range is typically stronger than the opponent's, and a triple barrel can solidify this advantage.

Notes

  • Pot Control: Being out of position, a triple barrel will inflate the pot, making subsequent decisions difficult if raised or called.
  • Opponent Tendencies: Against calling stations, reduce bluffs; against tight-passive players, increase triple barrel bluff frequency.
  • Board Texture: On dry boards (e.g., rainbow no straight potential), triple barrel bluffs have low success rates; they are more effective on dynamic boards that can complete straights or flushes.
  • River Bet Sizing: Typically, the river bet should be large (e.g., 2/3 pot or overbet) to maximize fold equity or value.

Typical Example

Preflop SB raises, BB calls. Flop (A♠9♠3♥), SB bets 2/3 pot, BB calls. Turn (7♦), SB bets 3/4 pot, BB calls. River (K♣), SB shoves all-in. In this example, SB can represent top pair with ace, a made flush or straight, or other strong hands.
