UTG+1 4Bet

UTG+1 4Bet

e., third raise made by a player in the position immediately after the UTG Under the Gun position.

Position and Betting Levels

  • Position: [UTG+1] is the next position after the under the gun ([UTG]) position, belonging to early position. Players typically only actively raise with strong hands from here.
  • Betting Levels: The order of raises in the pot is: blinds (or fold), initial raise (2Bet), re-raise (3Bet), and re-re-raise (4Bet). Thus, a 4Bet is the third raise preflop.

Common Situations

  • [Value 4Bet]: When [UTG+1] holds a very strong hand (e.g., [AA], [KK], [AKs]) and faces a 3Bet from early position, a 4Bet is made to build a large pot or isolate the opponent.
  • Bluff 4Bet: Occasionally mix in some medium-strength hands or draws like [A5s] for balance, but this is typically low frequency because early position tends to favor value hands.

Strategy Points

  • Range Strength: The [UTG]+1 4Bet range is usually extremely tight, about 2-3% of starting hands, mainly including [QQ]+ and AK.
  • Position Disadvantage: Post-flop, UTG+1 is out of position relative to the 3Bettor, so facing greater decision pressure after 4Betting.
  • Opponent Tendencies: Adjust based on the opponent's 3Bet frequency. If they 3Bet frequently, you can slightly widen your 4Bet range.

Notes

  • [Stack Depth]: When effective stacks are shallow (e.g., below 40BB), a 4Bet often means a shove.
  • Tournament Considerations: [ICM] effects must be taken into account; 4Betting from early position requires extra caution.
