UTG+1 Preflop Cold Call Dry

A scenario where a player cold-calls an opponent's raise from the UTG+1 position preflop, and then the flop comes dry.

Term Composition

  • UTG+1: The position directly after the under-the-gun (UTG) position, belonging to early position. The preflop range is typically tight.
  • Preflop Cold Call: A cold call before the flop, meaning a player who has not yet invested any dead money directly calls after an earlier position player raises, rather than re-raising or folding.
  • Dry: Describes a dry flop texture, i.e., a board lacking drawing possibilities (such as flush or straight draws), usually composed of high cards and middle cards, e.g., a rainbow flop of K-7-2.

Strategy Implications

After a cold call from UTG+1 and facing a dry flop texture, the player typically holds medium-strength hands (such as top pair or middle pair) or a slow-played strong hand (like a set). Since the probability of draws is low on a dry board, the preflop raiser is more inclined to make a continuation bet (C-Bet) to represent strength, while the cold caller can use the flop structure to defend or bluff.

Typical Scenario

Example: UTG raises to 3BB, UTG+1 cold calls, and the rest fold. The flop comes K♠ 7♦ 2♣. At this point, UTG+1's calling range includes Kx, pocket pairs, A-high hands, etc. Facing a dry board, if UTG+1 holds top pair, they can call or raise; if holding air, they may fold or bluff.

Notes

On a dry flop, the cold caller's range should have playability. Avoid calling with marginal hands, as the probability of hitting the flop is low.
