翻牌前冷跟注(Preflop Cold Call)
In poker, a preflop cold call occurs when a player calls a raise without having previously invested any blinds or called any bets in the current hand.
Concept
A Preflop Cold Call refers to a situation before the flop where a player (who has not yet posted a blind or previously called) directly calls an existing raise, rather than re-raising or folding. The opposite of a "cold call" is a "call after a raise" (e.g., calling a raise from the big blind does not count as a cold call because a blind has already been posted).
Common Scenarios
- Against Loose-Aggressive Players: When the preflop raiser has a wide range, cold calling with medium-strength hands (e.g., medium-high pairs, suited connectors) can be used to enter the pot, leveraging positional advantage or implied odds.
- Multi-way Pots: If there are multiple callers, cold calling may reduce the chance of a heads-up pot, benefiting later-position players who can exploit implied odds post-flop.
- Small Blind: Cold calling from the small blind is generally weak due to positional disadvantage, but is sometimes used to defend the blind or re-steal.
Strategic Considerations
Cold calling typically requires stronger hand strength for the following reasons:
- Lack of Pot Odds: Since no chips have been invested, the risk-reward ratio is relatively low.
- Positional Disadvantage: Cold callers are often out of position (e.g., early position), making post-flop play more difficult.
- Risk of Re-raise: If facing a 3-bet, the cold caller may be forced to fold, losing the call chips.
Typical cold calling ranges include: small to medium pairs (TT-22), suited connectors (e.g., 76s), suited Ax, etc. Very strong hands (e.g., AA, AK) are usually re-raised rather than cold-called to avoid multi-way pots or missing value.
Simple Example
Folded to the button who raises, the small blind folds, and the big blind calls with 88. Since the big blind has already posted a blind, this is not a cold call. If the raise came from under the gun, and the button directly called (without having posted a blind), then the button's action would be a cold call.
