Preflop Cold Call

Overview

A preflop cold call is a specific type of call made before the flop. It is "cold" because the calling player has no prior money invested in the pot during the current hand (other than blinds or antes). For example, if a player in middle position raises, and a player on the button calls that raise without having acted yet (and without being the big blind), that button's call is a cold call.

Why Cold Calling Is Distinct

Cold calling differs from calling a raise with money already in the pot (e.g., the big blind calling a raise – that is a defending call, not cold). The term emphasizes that the caller enters the hand from a clean slate, facing a raise (and possibly multiple raises) without any stake. In many contexts, cold calling is considered a passive move that can signal a strong but non-premium hand (e.g., medium pairs, suited connectors) or a trap with a monster.

Strategic Implications

Hand Range & Strength

Cold calling ranges tend to be narrower than raising or folding ranges. A typical tight player might cold call with:

• Medium pairs (66–TT)
• Suited connectors (T9s, 98s, 87s)
• Suited aces (A2s–A9s)
• Occasionally strong hands like JJ or QQ if hoping for a squeeze play from behind.

However, advanced players often avoid cold calling because it caps their range and makes them exploitable. Many modern strategies favor 3-betting or folding over cold calling, except in specific situations.

Position & Table Dynamics

Cold calling from late position (button, cutoff) is more common than from early position. In early position, cold calling can be dangerous because players behind can raise and trap the caller. In late position, the caller has more information and can fold to a 3-bet or play multiway pots profitably.

Exploitability

Cold calling can be exploited by aggressive players who will 3-bet lightly against perceived weak ranges. To counter this, some players will cold call with very strong hands (e.g., AA, KK) to induce a squeeze from a loose opponent. This is known as a "cold call trap."
