UTG+1 Preflop Single Raised Pot
UTG+1 Preflop Single Raised Pot
Term: UTG+1 Preflop Single Raised Pot Refers to a pot formed preflop when a player in the UTG+1 Under the Gun +1 position faces a single raise.
Overview
UTG+1 (Under The Gun +1) is the second or third position in the preflop action order (depending on table size, typically the second position in 6-max and the third in 9-max). "Preflop Single Raised Pot" means there was only one raise preflop (usually an open raise from UTG or an earlier position), with no re-raise (3-Bet). This term often appears in strategy discussions to describe the decision environment for the UTG+1 player in specific situations.
Position Characteristics
- Disadvantaged Position: UTG+1 must act before multiple players behind (CO, BTN, blinds) postflop, putting them out of position.
- Tighter Range: Due to positional disadvantage, UTG+1's default preflop raising range is typically tighter, generally including only strong hands (e.g., high pairs, high suited connectors, etc.). However, when facing a raise, their defending range needs to be adjusted according to the opponent's raising range and the tendencies of subsequent players.
Strategy Points
- Calling vs. Raising: In a Single Raised Pot, UTG+1 players usually prefer calling, because re-raising (3-Bet) can force opponents to fold or re-raise, and the player is out of position. Only consider 3-Bet when holding a clear range advantage (e.g., with premium hands).
- Postflop Play: Due to positional disadvantage, postflop play should lean toward aggressive betting (when the board favors your range) or check-raising (bluff or value), avoiding a passive stance.
- Opponent Tendencies: Consider the raiser's position. For example, UTG's raising range is usually tighter, while CO or BTN's range may be wider.
Example
In a 9-handed game, UTG raises to 3BB, and Hero in UTG+1 holds 99. This is a typical Single Raised Pot scenario. Hero can choose to call, because 99 has decent equity against UTG's tight range, and Hero may flop a set. However, if players behind have a squeezing tendency, Hero might also choose to fold.
