Poker Term

UTG+1河牌彩虹面冷跟注(UTG+1 River Cold Call Rainbow)

Refers to a player who entered the pot from UTG+1 preflop, on the river facing a bet and a raise, only chooses to call, and the board is a rainbow with three different suits.

Term Composition

This term is composed of four elements:

  • UTG+1: Refers to the position immediately after UTG (under the gun), i.e., the second position after the first preflop action position. A player in this position typically has a stronger starting hand range.
  • River: The fourth and final round of community cards.
  • Cold Call: Calling directly after someone has bet and another has raised, rather than re-raising. Usually indicates holding a medium-strength hand that seeks no value but is unwilling to fold.
  • Rainbow: Refers to a board where all five community cards (flop, turn, river) are of different suits, meaning no flush is possible. This makes the board more focused on straights, pairs, etc., rather than flushes.

Strategic Implications

In this scenario, a player entered the pot preflop from UTG+1 and makes a cold call on a rainbow river. This usually suggests a hand range containing:

  • Top pair or middle pair, but worried about the opponent's straight or larger pair.
  • Potential straight draws or made straights, but concerned about a larger straight or full house from the opponent.
  • Hands with showdown value but not the nuts, seeking thin value by calling, and avoiding being bluffed by a raise. A rainbow board reduces the threat of flushes, so opponent raises are more likely to represent strong hands or bluffs. The cold call strategy here requires caution, as the pot is large after calling, and there may be players yet to act.

Typical Example

Suppose preflop, UTG+1 raises with A♥K♠, and multiple players call. The flop is Q♦J♦2♣ (non-rainbow), the turn is 7♣, and the river is 3♠ (the board is now Q♦J♦2♣7♣3♠, four different suits, non-rainbow). If the river is 9♥ (different from all suits on the flop – ♦, ♣, ♠ – forming a rainbow board), then the Rainbow condition is met. At this point, if UTG+1 had been betting and then gets raised, and he chooses to cold call, that constitutes a UTG+1 river cold call on a rainbow board.
