UTG 3Bet
UTG 3Bet
e., a re-raise of the initial raiser.
UTG 3-Bet (Under the Gun 3-Bet)
Overview
UTG 3-Bet refers to the third raise (i.e., a 3-bet) made by a player in the UTG (Under the Gun, the first position to the left of the big blind) during the pre-flop stage of Texas Hold'em, after another player has already opened. Since UTG is the earliest position pre-flop, a 3-bet from this spot typically represents either extremely strong hand strength or a carefully constructed range.
Position Characteristics
The UTG position is the most disadvantageous of all positions because many players still act behind. Making a 3-bet from this position means the player must accept the risk of being called, re-raised (4-bet), or even shoved by later players. Therefore, the UTG 3-bet range is usually very tight, primarily consisting of strong hands like AA, KK, AKs, etc.
Strategy Considerations
- Value Range: In standard situations, UTG 3-bets should be value-oriented, avoiding marginal hands that complicate the pot.
- Balance: To prevent opponents from easily reading their range, top players occasionally balance with suited connectors or small pairs, but at a very low frequency.
- Sizing: Typical 3-bet sizing is 3-4 times the initial raise (e.g., if the open is 3BB, 3-bet to 9-12BB), but this should be adjusted based on stack depth and opponent tendencies.
- Subsequent Actions: After a UTG 3-bet is 4-bet, the player can usually only continue with very strong hands. If called, post-flop play must be cautious due to the disadvantageous position.
Notes
- Avoid Frequent 3-Bets: Overly frequent 3-betting from UTG severely leaks range information and can be exploited by later-position players.
- Reading Opponents: The range can be slightly widened against weak-passive opponents but should be tightened against aggressive ones.
- Stack Depth: With deep stacks (>100BB), speculative hands like suited connectors can be added sparingly. With short stacks (<40BB), use only the strongest hands.
Typical Example
Assume a 6-handed table with blinds 1/2. UTG holds AA and open raises to 6. Middle position calls, and the CO player raises to 18 (3-bet). UTG can now 4-bet to 42 or go all-in directly. Since the UTG 3-bet itself is already a strong signal, here AA is typically used for a 4-bet.
Common Misconceptions
Beginners often mistakenly think that the UTG 3-bet range can be as wide as on the button. In reality, UTG 3-bets face much more pressure, so the range should be tightened by roughly 30-50% compared to later positions.
