Poker Term

枪口位置河牌圈干燥牌面五下注(UTG River 5-Bet Dry)

In Texas Hold'em on the river, the player in the UTG position makes a fifth bet i.e., another raise after four raises on a dry board.

Term Analysis

This term is a combination of multiple poker concepts. It is extremely rare in actual gameplay, typically existing in theory or unconventional scenarios.

Components

  • UTG (Under the Gun): The position to the immediate left of the big blind, acting first preflop.
  • River: The fifth community card, also the final round of betting.
  • 5-Bet: Refers to the fifth bet in a raising sequence. Typical raising sequence: big blind checks or bets → raise (2-bet) → re-raise (3-bet) → re-raise again (4-bet) → re-raise again (5-bet).
  • Dry: A board texture with no possible draws. For example, a rainbow board or a board with no straight draws, such as K♠ 5♣ 2♦.

Practical Significance

In a standard river betting structure, there is usually one bet and up to three raises (e.g., bet → raise → re-raise → cap), but in no-limit hold'em, the number of raises is theoretically unlimited. However, since player ranges become extremely narrow, a 5-bet in practice almost exclusively occurs preflop or on the flop. A 5-bet on the river typically implies very deep stacks or unconventional play.

Strategic Implications

  • Extremely Narrow Range: A UTG 5-bet on the river indicates a very strong hand (e.g., the nuts or a full house), and the dry board eliminates drawing possibilities, making it difficult for opponents to bluff.
  • Very High Risk: After multiple raises, the pot becomes enormous. A failed bluff would result in a huge loss. Therefore, this action is almost exclusively for value, not as a bluff.

Notes

Given the rarity of this term, it should be treated with caution in actual games. Beginners should not imitate it, and professional players use it only under specific dynamics.
