Poker Term

UTG河牌单色面反主动下注(UTG River Donk Bet Monotone)

On the river, the player who was in UTG preflop makes a donk bet on a monotone board.

Term Explanation

UTG River Donk Bet Monotone refers to a situation where a player who was in the UTG (Under the Gun) position preflop leads out on the river with a bet (i.e., a donk bet) on a monotone board (all community cards of the same suit), despite not being the preflop raiser or the flop bettor. This is an unconventional betting line, typically used to exploit an aggressive opponent's tendency to over-fold or when holding an extremely strong hand.

Strategic Background

  • Positional Disadvantage: UTG is the first to act preflop and is usually out of position postflop. A donk bet on the river can easily raise opponent’s suspicion.
  • Monotone Board: A monotone board means a flush is highly likely. If the UTG player holds the nut flush or a high pair with a flush draw, they might choose to donk bet to avoid losing value if the opponent checks behind.
  • Motivations for Donk Betting: Common motivations include:
    • Holding a very strong made hand (e.g., nut flush) and wanting to build the pot.
    • Bluffing, using the monotone board and the many missed draws in the opponent’s range to force a fold.
    • Preventing the opponent from checking back the river after betting the flop, thereby missing value.

Typical Example

Suppose UTG raised preflop, then checked both the flop and turn. The river brings all cards of the same suit (e.g., A♠K♠7♠2♠3♠). If UTG now holds Q♠J♠ (having made a flush) and bets, that is a UTG River Donk Bet Monotone. This bet may cause an opponent holding an A or K without a flush to fold.

Considerations

  • Frequency should be low: Donk betting from UTG is easily readable if overused.
  • Opponent tendencies: Against calling stations, a donk bet may not generate enough folds to be profitable.
