Winner Takes All In the Money

A poker tournament prize structure where only first place receives all the prize money, and the remaining players receive nothing.

Overview

"Winner Takes All In the Money" is an extreme tournament payout structure. In this format, all entry fees from participants are pooled into the total prize pool, but only the final champion (first place) receives the entire prize. Second place and all lower finishers receive no money. This is essentially a "winner-takes-all" model, but "In the Money" normally refers to the payout zone—here it specifically means only first place is in the money.

Characteristics

  • High variance: Since only first place yields a return, players adopt extremely aggressive strategies with very high risk.
  • Common scenarios: Typically found in small online tournaments or certain special events (e.g., the final table of a satellite tournament) to quickly determine a winner.
  • Difference from standard: Standard tournaments pay multiple places (e.g., top 10%), whereas this structure rewards only one person.

Strategy Impact

Players must employ extremely high-risk play because any finish other than first is worthless. Therefore, early chip accumulation and avoiding early elimination are key. However, even making the final table yields nothing for second place, so the goal is to go all-out for the win.

Example

Suppose a tournament has 100 participants, each paying a $10 entry fee, for a total prize pool of $1,000. Under the "Winner Takes All In the Money" structure, only the champion receives $1,000; places 2 through 100 get nothing.
