Buy Action

The practice of purchasing a percentage of another player's tournament entries or cash game sessions in exchange for a share of their potential winnings.

Overview

Buy Action is a common arrangement in poker where an investor (the buyer) provides funds to a player (the seller) in return for a percentage of the player's winnings. This is typically seen in high-stakes tournaments or cash games where the buy-in is large, and the player seeks to reduce variance or afford entry, while the investor gains exposure to the player's skill without playing themselves.

How It Works

  • The buyer pays a portion of the buy-in or a fixed amount to the seller.
  • In exchange, the buyer receives a specified percentage of the seller's net profits (or gross winnings) from that session or tournament.
  • If the seller cashes, the buyer receives their share minus any agreed-upon markup (premium).
  • If the seller loses, the buyer loses their investment.

Key Terms

  • Markup: A premium added to the buy-in cost. For example, if a tournament buy-in is $1,000 and the seller offers action at 1.2 markup, the buyer pays $120 for 10% of the action (since 10% of $1,000 = $100, plus 20% markup = $120).
  • Sweat: The buyer may follow the seller's progress, often via live streaming or updates, especially in high-stakes games.

Example

Player A enters a $10,000 WSOP Main Event. Player B buys 20% of A's action for $2,200 (assuming 1.1 markup). If A wins $100,000, B receives 20% of $100,000 = $20,000 (markup does not affect profit share). If A busts without cashing, B loses the $2,200.

Advantages and Risks

  • For the seller: Reduces variance, allows entry into higher buy-ins, and gains a backer.
  • For the buyer: Access to profitable players without needing to play, but must trust the seller's skill and integrity.
  • Risks: Collusion, dishonest reporting, or the seller running bad.

Legal and Ethical Considerations

Buying action is generally legal in private arrangements, but some casinos or tournaments may restrict it. Staking agreements should be written to avoid disputes.
