UTG+1 Open Raise
A raise made by the player in the UTG+1 position (second to act preflop) when no other player has entered the pot before them.
Overview
UTG+1 Open Raise refers to the action of raising the pot as the first voluntary money entered by the player in the UTG+1 position (the seat immediately to the left of the Under the Gun player). In a standard 9-handed full-ring game, UTG+1 is the second player to act preflop after UTG. This position is considered early position (EP), with three players yet to act behind (UTG+2, UTG+3, and the blinds).
Strategic Considerations
Opening ranges from UTG+1 are typically tight due to the disadvantage of acting early in subsequent betting rounds. A standard UTG+1 open raise range might include premium hands like AA, KK, QQ, AK, AQs, and sometimes JJ, TT, AQo, or suited broadways, depending on game dynamics. The size of the open raise is usually 2.5 to 3 big blinds (BB) in cash games, though some players adjust smaller (2 BB) or larger (4 BB) based on table tendencies or tournament stages.
Importance of Position
UTG+1 lacks positional advantage for the rest of the hand: they will act first postflop (unless the big blind checks). This makes it harder to extract value with strong hands or bluff effectively. As a result, players should avoid marginal hands from this seat that play poorly out of position, such as small suited connectors or low pocket pairs.
Adjustments
- At a tight table: Slightly widen the opening range by including hands like KQo, AJo, or 99, as fewer players will call or re-raise.
- Against aggressive players: Tighten up, as 3-bets from later positions will put pressure on your marginal holdings.
- In tournaments with antes: The increased dead money may encourage slightly larger raises or a wider range to steal the blinds.
Common Mistakes
- Opening too wide from UTG+1, leading to frequent difficult postflop decisions out of position.
- Using a fixed raise size regardless of table dynamics. Adjusting the raise size can exploit tendencies: larger raises against loose callers, smaller against tight players.
- Failing to consider stack sizes. With short stacks, the range should shift toward hands that can commit easily (high pairs, big aces).
