Barry Carter started his poker journey in 2005 when a friend showed him online poker, sparking his interest. He began a personal blog about the game, which caught the attention of the editor of WPT Magazine, leading to freelance writing assignments. At the time, the profession of "poker writer" barely existed, and Carter essentially invented his role. He freelanced for print magazines including Cardplayer, Poker Pro Europe, WPT Poker, Inside Poker Business, and PokerNews Magazine.

In 2006, Carter joined PokerNews as the UK site editor and chief copywriter for all PokerNews sites, a role he held until 2011. He then moved to PokerStrategy.com as a News Editor, where he remains to this day. His responsibilities include opinion pieces, interviews, ad copy, social media, podcasting, press releases, and B2B content. Over his career, he has also worked in live tournament reporting, TV production, PR, consulting, and podcast hosting.

Carter's most significant achievement is co-authoring The Mental Game of Poker (2011) with renowned mental game coach Jared Tendler. The book became a critically acclaimed bestseller, focusing on the psychological aspects of poker. He and Tendler later worked on a sequel. With Dara O'Kearney, Carter co-wrote Poker Satellite Strategy, leveraging O'Kearney's expertise as one of the world's best satellite players. Carter also won the 'Best Poker Media Provider' Award at the APAT Awards.
