Brek Schutten

Brek Schutten was born and raised in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He attended Calvin College, where he studied sports management and first played poker casually with friends in the dormitory basements. After college, he worked as a nurse before turning his focus to poker. His competitive drive emerged in 2016 when he posted a strong result at a tournament at Soaring Eagle Casino and Resort in Mount Pleasant, Michigan. That performance motivated him to pursue poker more seriously, and he began playing full-time shortly thereafter.

Schutten’s first major breakthrough came in April 2021 at the World Poker Tour Seminole Hard Rock Poker Showdown in Hollywood, Florida. He entered the $3,400 buy-in no-limit hold’em event and outlasted a massive field of 2,482 entries—the largest in WPT history at the time. By defeating the field, he earned a first-place prize of $1,261,095, along with a WPT championship trophy. That win catapulted him onto the national stage and provided the financial foundation for his professional career. Later that year, he cashed in the WPT Five Diamond World Poker Classic for $45,735, further solidifying his live-tournament credentials.

In the summer of 2023, Schutten captured his first WSOP bracelet at the $25,000 buy-in no-limit hold’em event during the WSOP series at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. The tournament attracted 277 entrants, a field that included poker legends such as Phil Ivey and Daniel Negreanu. Schutten navigated the final table with patience and precision, ultimately defeating Florida’s Tyler Stafman heads-up to claim the top prize of $1,405,641. Afterward, he described the victory as “surreal,” having come close to a bracelet in previous years. The win brought his total live tournament earnings past $5.2 million at the time, placing him fourth all-time among Michigan players, behind only Ryan Riess, Joe Cada, and Daniel Heimiller.

Schutten’s deep runs have not been limited to his two signature titles. In 2022, he finished fifth in a $25,000 buy-in WSOP event for $320,000, then followed that with a runner-up finish in another $25,000 buy-in event for more than $820,000. Both results occurred during a paternity leave, as he balanced family life with high-stakes poker. In December 2023, he added two cashes at the WPT World Championship at Wynn Las Vegas: 13th place for $88,642 in the $25,600 high roller and 12th place for $10,375 in a $3,000 PKO event. Overall, his World Poker Tour record shows six cashes for $1.42 million, with the 2021 win accounting for the bulk of that sum.

Schutten is known for a patient, calculated approach, particularly in deep-stack situations. He emphasizes the importance of studying hand histories and understanding ranges, pot odds, and opponent tendencies. After his runner-up finish in 2022, he admitted to lingering regrets over key decisions at the final table, which fueled his drive to win a bracelet. He views each tournament as a learning opportunity and maintains a resilient mindset, even through downswings. His ability to adapt to varying dynamics and his tolerance for variance have been cited as strengths by peers.

Schutten resides in Grand Rapids, Michigan, with his family. He took paternity leave from nursing during his 2022 WSOP run, demonstrating his commitment to both family and poker. After turning professional, he transitioned to poker as his primary income source. As of 2023, his combined live and online earnings exceed $6 million, though precise online figures are not publicly disclosed.
