Definition

Scoop refers to winning the entire pot in a poker hand, particularly in split-pot games where the pot is divided between the best high hand and the best low hand. When a player wins both halves, they are said to have scooped the pot.

Usage in Split-Pot Games

In games like Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8) or Stud Hi-Lo, the pot is split between the highest-ranking hand and the lowest-ranking hand meeting certain qualifications (usually an 8-low or better). A player who holds a hand that is simultaneously the best high and the best low wins the entire pot—that is a scoop. For example, holding A-2-3-4-5 (a wheel) with a flush or straight to the 5 typically qualifies for both high and low if no higher straight or flush exists.

Scooping gives a significant advantage because you win double the chips you would by taking only one half. In Omaha Hi-Lo, a scoop can dramatically increase your stack in a single hand.

Usage in Other Contexts

Although "scoop" is most commonly associated with split-pot games, it can also be used in any poker variant to mean winning the entire pot uncontested. For instance, in No-Limit Texas Hold'em, if a player bets and everyone folds, that player scoops the pot. Similarly, in a showdown where one player has the best hand, they scoop.

Strategic Importance

In split-pot games, the ability to scoop is a key strategic objective. Starting hands that can win both high and low (e.g., A-2-3-4 with a suited ace) are highly valuable. Conversely, hands that only play for one half of the pot (e.g., a low-only hand with no high potential) are less desirable because they can only win half the pot at best, while risking the same amount as a scooper. Skilled players often fold marginal low-only hands if they cannot also draw to a high hand, as the potential payoff is reduced.

Example

In an Omaha Hi-Lo hand, the board shows A♠ 2♦ 3♥ 7♣ 8♠. Player X holds A♥ 2♠ 4♣ 5♣. Their best high hand is A-A-2-3-7 (a pair of aces), which may not be the best high if another player has a higher hand like a straight. But they also have a low hand: A-2-3-4-7 (using the A,2,3 from board and 4,5 from hand), which likely qualifies as the best low. If no opponent has a better high and no one has a better low, Player X scoops the entire pot.
