Bryan Baird

Bryan Baird began his poker career playing sit-n-go (SNG) tournaments online, primarily on Absolute Poker (AP). By 2007, he had established himself as one of the top five tournament rake generators on the site, paying approximately $30,000 in rake that year. His early results were solid: in 2007 he played 1,684 SNGs for a profit of $14,140, and in April alone he played 629 SNGs earning $3,212.

In mid-2007, Baird made the decision to move to PokerStars after a dispute with Absolute Poker over reload bonuses. Despite his high rake generation, AP refused to grant him reload bonuses worth $200 each, calling the situation "absolutely the dumbest thing I've ever seen." He announced his move on his blog, stating he would go where his business was appreciated. He initially played the $27 SNGs on Stars to get comfortable, then planned to move up to the $60 level on August 1.

Baird was known for his disciplined, non-tilting approach and his effective multitabling. He considered himself as good as anyone at the $27 level and believed players at higher limits were not significantly better. He advocated a basic ICM pushbot strategy for SNGs, emphasizing that successful multitabling requires first being a winning player at a single table. He personally played between 8 and 12 tables concurrently, noting that above 12 his decision-making suffered. In his blog, he advised players to gradually increase table count as they gained comfort.

Baird tracked his progress rigorously, setting monthly goals. For August 2007, his goals included playing 1,500 SNGs at the $60 level, continued progress toward "world domination," and having fun playing the game rather than treating it as work. He also mentioned a day when he played 30 SNGs and lost $204, demonstrating his commitment to transparency. His long-term ambition was to write a full instructional SNG book for beginner and intermediate players, targeting completion by the end of summer.

While Baird did not achieve widespread fame, his blog provides valuable insight into the life of a professional online SNG grinder in the mid-2000s. His emphasis on bankroll management, gradual table expansion, and mental game (avoiding results orientation) offers lessons for aspiring players. His move from AP to Stars also highlights the importance of site loyalty and player treatment in the online poker ecosystem.
