David Owston

David Owston (also known as Dan Owston) began playing poker in 2004 for enjoyment. He quickly found success, winning numerous large-field freerolls and turning a $3 qualifier into a 15th-place finish in the online poker Sunday Million. He also won the Ladbrokes Sunday Lunch and turned $100 into $12,600 on Mansion playing NL 8-handed. His early live highlight came when he won his first live game—a $10 rebuy—for £1,310, just two days before facing eviction, which he considers his greatest achievement.

Owston plays on PokerStars under the screen name 'Cardiffbiker'. His online resume includes winning a $5 turbo for $3,200, final-tabling the first ECOOP on iPoker (1,600 runners, $4,900), and winning a $100 double stack tournament in March 2009. He also won multiple WSOP packages through satellites, including one for $12,000 from a $4.22 buy-in, though he was unable to attend. He qualified for and played in the APPT Seoul 2008 and EPT Dortmund 2008.

Owston has a strong live record. In 2006, he won five consecutive live games at Grosvenor Cardiff and made $56,000 profit in three months playing only MTTs. In 2022, he became champion of the World Championship of Amateur Poker Main Event. In 2023, he finished fifth in the APAT UK Amateur Championship Main Event for £2,000. He has also shared tables with poker legends such as Daniel Negreanu, Joe Hachem, Marcel Luske, and Isabelle Mercier.

In his own words, Owston describes his style as 'rocky loose'. He is known for an aggressive, calculating approach that puts constant pressure on opponents, especially in online tournaments. He leverages range construction and frequency balancing to maintain consistency across multiple streets.

Owston hails from Haverfordwest, South West Wales. He studied accounting at Cardiff Metropolitan University and currently works as a postgraduate student. He has over 15 years of experience in sales and management. In his early poker forum posts, he humorously described himself as an 'alcoholic, gambling degenerate and self confessed poker legend'.
