Jani Sointula

Jani Sointula (born c. 1975 in Helsinki, Finland) emerged on the international poker scene in November 2004 by winning the prestigious Monte Carlo Millions tournament. The event, held in Monaco, featured a star-studded final table including Phil Ivey, Chris Ferguson, and fellow Finn Juha Helppi. Sointula entered the final table as a underdog, but after a key hand where his pocket nines held against Ivey's ace-six, he doubled up and eventually eliminated Ivey in third place. In heads-up play against Helppi, Sointula hit a straight on the turn to take a commanding lead and sealed the victory when a river ace gave him the winning hand, earning the $400,000 first prize. This triumph was hailed as an upset victory for the 'fighting spirit' (SISU) of Finnish poker players.

Following his Monte Carlo Millions win, Sointula continued to perform on major tours. In March 2005, he finished on the bubble of the final table at the first European Poker Tour (EPT) Grand Final. Later that year, he cashed in the 2005 World Series of Poker $10,000 no-limit hold'em Main Event, finishing 198th out of a large field. In June 2006, Sointula made his only World Poker Tour (WPT) final table at the Grand Prix de Paris, where he finished runner-up when his A♥5♦ lost to Christian Grundtvig's 6♥6♦. As of 2008, his total live tournament winnings exceeded $1,000,000. He also has four WSOP money finishes and two EPT cashes, though he has never won a bracelet or a WPT title.

Sointula is known for a solid, mathematically grounded approach to the game, often employing GTO principles and precise range calculations. His online handle 'Hellraiser' reflects an aggressive but calculated style, and he has been a consistent presence in Finnish poker circles, both live and online. In 2004, he was awarded the European Poker Awards Rookie of the Year, a testament to his early impact. Despite a relatively low public profile, Sointula's victory at the Monte Carlo Millions remains a highlight of his career and a notable moment in Finnish poker history.
