Pietro Semeraro

Pietro Semeraro is an Italian professional poker player and academic who bridges the worlds of poker strategy and communication sciences. He is known for his innovative approach to live poker, which integrates semiotics and ethnography to gain a competitive edge beyond Game Theory Optimal (GTO) models.

Semeraro authored a thesis titled "Da gioco a sport. La valorizzazione delle abilità nel cambiamento culturale del poker live" (From Game to Sport: The Valorization of Skills in the Cultural Change of Live Poker), exploring how poker evolved from a game to a recognized sport.

Semeraro developed a "Semiotic-Ethnographic Method" for live poker, articulated in four phases corresponding to each street of Texas Hold'em: Pre-Flop opponent classification, Flop semantic range narrowing, Turn situation definition, and River confirmation or correction. He argues that while GTO works online, live play requires reading human signals—tone of voice, posture, hesitation, and narrative consistency. His method does not reject GTO but extends it by adding an interpretive layer. He states, "My final call, fold, or raise doesn't depend on the absolute strength of my hand, but on the coherence of the narrative."

In 2025, Semeraro won the ReMida Poker Team tournament in Italy, defeating a field of 672 entries. He struck an ICM deal at the final table and was crowned "Re Mida" (King Midas). His victory also propelled his team, SportBull Skill, to first place in the team standings, with teammate Giovanni Socci finishing third.
