Shawn Nguyen

Shawn Nguyen, also known as Shahram "Shawn" Sheikhan, was born on December 29, 1969, in Iran. He moved to the United States as a child and became a resident alien at age nine. Settling in Las Vegas, Nevada, he built a life that included owning a retail chain of tobacco and tattoo stores. His poker career began in the backrooms and pool halls of California before he transitioned to the Las Vegas tournament scene in his early twenties.

Nguyen's most notable achievement came at the 2005 World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event, where he finished 11th, earning $600,000. This deep run brought him national attention and established him as a formidable tournament player. In March 2006, he reached the final four of the NBC National Heads-Up Poker Championship, defeating Gus Hansen along the way (he made four of a kind in that hand) before losing to eventual champion Ted Forrest; the fourth-place finish paid $125,000.

In July 2007, Nguyen placed third in the WSOP No Limit Deuce-to-Seven Lowball event. He also captured a Poker After Dark title, defeating a field that included Phil Laak, Phil Hellmuth, Daniel Negreanu, Mike Matusow, and Antonio Esfandiari, earning $120,000. His total live tournament winnings exceed $1.5 million, with $1,160,910 of that coming from 10 WSOP cashes.

Nguyen is known for an aggressive, pressure-based style, often using raises and continuation bets to force opponents into difficult decisions. He is also recognized for his strong reading of opponents and emotional control, though his table demeanor has occasionally sparked controversy. At the 2005 WSOP, he was involved in a heated exchange with Mike Matusow after slamming the table on a flop in a hand he wasn't in, which gave away information. Both players received penalties. He also clashed with Phil Hellmuth on Poker After Dark, where Hellmuth accused him of excessive talking during a hand with Annie Duke.

Nguyen's life off the felt has been marked by legal issues. In 1999, during a heavy rainstorm in Las Vegas, he lost control of his vehicle and collided with another car, resulting in the death of a 91-year-old passenger. In 2007, he was arrested for violating his immigration status due to a 1995 misdemeanor conviction for sexual battery on a minor; he served nine months in prison and five years' probation. He faced deportation proceedings, which were halted. In June 2022, he pleaded guilty to operating illegal marijuana dispensaries in Southern California, and in November 2023, he was sentenced to four years in federal prison.

Despite his off-table troubles, Shawn Nguyen remains a recognizable figure in the poker world, remembered for his aggressive play, his deep WSOP Main Event run, and his appearances on televised poker shows like High Stakes Poker and Poker After Dark. His career serves as a reminder of the highs and lows that can accompany a life in professional poker.
