Tom Dwan

Tom Dwan was born on July 30, 1986, in Edison, New Jersey. He began playing poker online at the age of 17 on Paradise Poker, using a $50 deposit he received from his father for his birthday. Dwan initially focused on sit-and-go tournaments before transitioning to multiplayer cash games and eventually heads-up cash games. He attended Boston University but dropped out after his first year to pursue poker full-time. Prior to playing professionally, Dwan worked at McDonald's, a fact he revealed on NBC's Poker After Dark.

Isildur1 won several million dollars from Dwan, and the player was later revealed to be the Swedish prodigy Viktor Blom. Dwan subsequently invited Blom to participate in the Full Tilt Poker Durrrr Million Dollar Challenge in London in November 2009.

The "durrrr Challenge" itself was issued in January 2009: Dwan offered $1,000,000 to anyone (except Phil Galfond) willing to play him heads-up for 50,000 hands at $200/$400 limits or higher on four tables. The challenge was never completed to the agreed number of hands, but it generated immense publicity. By the end of 2009, HighStakesDB reported Dwan had lost $4.35 million for the year, though he recouped $2.7 million in December alone. In early 2010, Dwan won $1.6 million in the first two weeks of April and was up $7.3 million by April 21, but then lost $4 million in the following three weeks, leaving him ahead $3.3 million for the year.

While Dwan is best known for cash games, he has amassed over $6.9 million in live tournament earnings from more than 55 cashes. His largest career cash came in August 2019 at the Triton Poker Super High Roller Series London, where he finished 8th in the £250,000 Short Deck event for £656,500 ($793,775). The day before, he placed 5th in a £100,000 Short Deck event for £514,000 ($624,514). Other notable scores include:

• 6th place in the A$250,000 Aussie Millions event in 2014 for A$500,000 ($447,844).
• 2nd place in the $1,500 WSOP No-Limit Hold'em event in 2010 for $381,885.

Dwan's primary arena is high-stakes cash games. He has been a regular in Macau's private games, often playing against wealthy businessmen and professional players. According to High Roller Poker, Dwan has amassed almost $4.1 million in profit from televised live-streamed cash games, including $3 million on High Stakes Poker. However, he is reportedly down about $3.2 million in Triton Poker cash games.

He appeared on NBC's National Heads-Up Poker Championship, the fourth through seventh seasons of Poker After Dark, the third through fifth seasons of Full Tilt Poker's Million Dollar Cash Game, and the fifth, sixth, eighth, and ninth seasons of GSN's High Stakes Poker.
