Tony Laughing Sr.

Tony Laughing Sr. was born Antanas Guoga in Lithuania. A gifted child, he excelled in chess at age six and became the local Rubik's Cube champion in Kaunas. At 11, his family moved to Australia, where he developed into a professional basketball player before transitioning to representing athletes as an agent.

He began playing poker at 15 in Australia, often facing older opponents who targeted him. Despite his youth, he thrived on competition and moved to Hong Kong to deal cards. By his late teens, he had built a $200,000 bankroll and headed to Las Vegas with a fake ID, only to lose it all. Broke, he returned to Australia and later settled in Vienna, Austria, where he honed his skills and adopted the nickname “Tony G.”

Tony made his live tournament debut in late 2001, finishing second in the inaugural European World Series of Poker (EWSOP) when his Q-Q lost to Q-5 after his opponent hit running fives. Over the years, he amassed over $1.3 million in live tournament winnings. He became a regular on televised high-stakes cash games, including the PokerStars Big Game, where his confrontations with Phil Hellmuth became legendary.

Known for his trash-talking, Tony frequently clashed with Hellmuth, once challenging him to a heads-up match on the Life Outside Poker podcast. He also famously sent Ralph Perry “on his bike” and yelled at Andrew Robl during the Big Game. His unpredictable behavior made him a TV favorite.

Outside poker, Tony founded PokerNews in 2002, which grew into a leading poker media outlet. He later entered politics, serving as a Member of the European Parliament. Additionally, public records show a Tony Laughter (possibly a variant) as owner of Larson Global Sourcing/Shorewood Installation Co. in Michigan, with education from UCLA (1971–1974). These business interests complement his poker career.

Tony Laughing Sr. remains a polarizing figure in poker, celebrated for his skill, wit, and larger-than-life persona. His journey from Lithuanian immigrant to poker star and entrepreneur exemplifies the diverse paths within the game.
