Xuan Tan was born into a wealthy family in Hubei, China. His father is a member of the Education Ministry's group and was known for being extremely strict. After earning his college diploma in 2009, Tan bought a dance and art school, initially pursuing the arts. He later shifted his focus to more reliable industries, entering the steel sector and subsequently the financial industry. Tan currently resides in Shenzhen, where he runs successful businesses in these fields. His financial independence allowed him to compete at the highest stakes without the typical bankroll constraints.

Tan discovered poker in 2014 when a friend invited him to the largest poker club in Wuhan. He was intrigued, comparing the scene to Macau casinos seen in movies. After playing two games, he was advised to watch a 25/50 cash game. He immediately sat down and lost 20,000 RMB in his first session. The next day, he returned and lost an additional 70,000 RMB. Despite the losses, poker captivated him. He developed an addiction and spent the following two months playing and losing every day. As his business earnings began to decline, Tan lost tens of millions of dollars of his wealth in just a few months. His father strongly objected to his poker playing when he learned of it.

In 2015, Tan realized that poker was a game of skill and began studying the top players, both locally in Wuhan and internationally. He started emulating the best players in his area and watched videos of Tom Dwan and Phil Ivey competing in high-stakes tournaments. After a year of intensive study, Tan moved to Shenzhen to play with friends. He rapidly improved his skills and established himself as a formidable player. His first major victory came in the 2015 China Poker Games Main Event, where he outlasted 1,075 players to win $281,185 and secure the lead. This win marked the beginning of his professional poker career.

In 2017, Short Deck (6+ Hold'em) gained popularity among Asian high-stakes players. Tan participated in a HK$1,000,000 Short Deck event and quickly excelled in the format, which would become his specialty. His aggressive, high-variance style proved particularly effective in Short Deck, where equities run close and aggression is premium.

Xuan Tan is best known for his performances on the Triton Poker Super High Roller Series. His career-best cash came in May 2018 at the Triton Super High Roller Series in Montenegro, where he finished second in a HK$1,000,000 No-Limit Hold'em Short Deck Ante Only event for $2,355,730. The following year, in August 2019, he won a £100,000 No-Limit Hold'em Short Deck Private Event at Triton London for $2,285,430. In that same series, he also placed sixth in a £250,000 Short Deck Private Event, earning $1,291,321. These results solidified his reputation as one of the world's best Short Deck players.

In March 2024, Tan won the $50,000 Short Deck event at the Triton Super High Roller Series Jeju, collecting $922,000. He successfully defended his title in March 2025, taking down the same $50,000 Short Deck Ante-Only event for $708,000, defeating a final table that included Phil Ivey. Other notable results include a fifth-place finish in a $100,000 Short Deck event at Triton Jeju in September 2025 ($464,000), a 14th place in a $150,000 Eight Max event ($273,000), and a fifth-place finish in the Korea Poker Cup Series $20,000 event ($63,000). As of early 2026, Tan's total live earnings exceed $12.9 million, placing him fourth on the China All-Time Money List.

Xuan Tan is synonymous with ultra-aggressive, high-variance poker. Opponents frequently describe him as “terrifying” to play against due to his unpredictability and willingness to apply maximum pressure with wide ranges. He is famous for making massive “hero calls” and executing audacious bluffs that GTO solvers would likely reject, relying instead on live reads and psychological dominance. His style is particularly effective in Short Deck, where the reduced deck increases variance and rewards aggression. Tan is known for his calm, introverted demeanor at the tables, which belies his fearless play. He approaches the game with a relaxed attitude, staying present and prepared even in the face of large swings.
