15bb Call Off

In Texas Hold'em tournaments, when effective stack depth is around 15 big blinds, the decision or range a player uses to call an opponent's all-in.

Term Definition

"15bb Call Off" is a common term in poker tournaments, specifically referring to the action of calling an All-in when the player or opponent has a stack of approximately 15 big blinds (bb). This decision typically occurs preflop or postflop and is a key component of short-stack strategy.

Usage Scenarios

  • Late Tournament Stages: As blinds increase, stacks become shorter, and 15bb is a critical threshold. Shoves and calls become significantly more frequent at this point.
  • Preflop Decisions: When an opponent shoves 15bb from any position, the player must decide whether to call based on their hand, position, opponent's range, and ICM (Independent Chip Model) factors.
  • Postflop Decisions: If the pot is large postflop and the remaining stack is around 15bb, calling an all-in also requires consideration of pot odds and hand equity.

Strategic Principles

  • Range Adjustment: Generally, the calling range is tighter than the raising range. For example, a typical range for calling a 15bb shove might include TT+ (tens or higher pocket pairs), AQ+ (ace-queen or better), etc., but this should be adjusted based on the opponent and ICM pressure.
  • ICM Impact: Near the money bubble or final table, calls require higher equity due to increased elimination risk. The calling range tightens significantly during the bubble.
  • Pot Odds: Facing a 15bb shove, the caller often gets favorable pot odds (around 1.3:1 to 1.5:1), but must still weigh hand equity.
