Overview
A-5 Triple Draw (Ace to Five Triple Draw) is a popular lowball poker game, belonging to the Draw Poker family. In the game, each player is dealt five hole cards, then up to three drawing rounds, with a betting round after each draw. The best hand is an Ace-to-Five low, where Ace is the lowest rank, and straights and flushes do not count as low hands (i.e., they do not break the low combination). Therefore, the best hand is 5-4-3-2-A (not a straight, but a low hand), known as the "Wheel."
Game Flow
- Deal: Each player receives five hole cards.
- First betting round: Starts from the small blind or according to the rules.
- First draw: Players may discard any number of cards (0-5) and draw the same number from the deck to have five cards.
- Second betting round.
- Second draw.
- Third betting round.
- Third draw.
- Fourth betting round (final betting round).
- Showdown: Compare hands; the best low hand wins.
Hand Rankings
Under A-5 low rules, hands are ranked from best to worst:
- 5-4-3-2-A (Wheel)
- 6-4-3-2-A
- 6-5-3-2-A
- 6-5-4-2-A
- 6-5-4-3-A
- 7-4-3-2-A
- And so on. Note: Ace is always the lowest rank; straights and flushes do not improve hand value, meaning A-2-3-4-5 is not considered a straight but still a low hand.
Strategy Points
- Starting hand selection: Typically aim for low cards, such as A-2-3-4-X (X low) or A-2-3-5, etc. Avoid holding pairs or cards higher than 8.
- Drawing decisions: Adjust dynamically based on hand potential, opponent actions, and position. For example, holding A-2-3-5, you usually only draw one high card.
- Bluffing and value betting: Due to multiple draws and high hand volatility, there is significant room for bluffing. However, pay attention to opponents' drawing patterns.
Common Variants
This game is often compared with "Deuce to Seven Triple Draw," which emphasizes high hand values (Ace is high, straights and flushes are bad). The A-5 variant is more attractive due to the Wheel hand.
