AFq from HJ

AFq from HJ

HJ Position Aggression Frequency AFq from HJ The frequency with which a player actively bets or raises post-flop when in the Hijack position, reflecting the player's aggression from that position.

What is AFq from HJ?

AFq (Aggression Frequency) is a statistical metric in Texas Hold'em that measures a player's tendency to be aggressive (bet or raise) after the flop (flop, turn, river). It is usually expressed as a percentage and calculated as: AFq = (Bets + Raises) / (Bets + Raises + Calls + Checks). A higher AFq indicates the player is more inclined to actively bet or raise rather than call or check.

"from HJ" specifically means this statistic is calculated only when the player is in the Hijack position (also known as Under the Gun +1, i.e., UTG+1, or simply HJ, typically the third seat at a 9-handed table). The HJ position is a middle-early position, and a player's postflop decisions here are influenced by position, pot size, opponent range, etc.

Uses of AFq from HJ

  • Evaluate aggression level: AFq from HJ helps determine how aggressive a player is postflop from the HJ. For example, an AFq of 45% means the player actively bets or raises about half the time postflop.
  • Identify tendencies: A high AFq (e.g., >60%) may indicate an overly aggressive player, while a low AFq (e.g., <30%) suggests a passive one.
  • Aid decision-making: Against a high-AFq opponent, consider raising with strong hands or setting traps; against a low-AFq opponent, apply more pressure with bets.

Important Notes

  • AFq only measures postflop aggression frequency and does not include preflop actions (e.g., raises or folds). It should be analyzed together with PFR (Preflop Raise) and VPIP (Voluntarily Put Money In Pot).
  • AFq is less meaningful with a small sample size; typically, at least several hundred hands are needed for reliable insights.
  • Specificity of the HJ position: Postflop, the HJ often faces multiple subsequent players (CO, BTN, blinds) and is at a positional disadvantage. Therefore, a reasonable AFq range for HJ may be lower than for later positions (e.g., BTN).

Related Statistics

  • AF (Aggression Factor): Another aggression metric calculated as (Bets + Raises) / Calls, reflecting the ratio of aggressive actions to calls.
  • VPIP & PFR: Measure preflop involvement and raising tendency respectively; together with AFq, they form a player profile.
  • Positional Statistics: AFq can be tracked separately for different positions (e.g., BTN, CO, SB) to comprehensively understand a player's positional strategy.
